  1. Music Graduation Night – Research Poster Session “Unified Kinesthetic” the Effect of Instructed Movement on Ensemble Expressivity Andrea Black Oregon State University blackan@onid.orst.edu Abstract Materials and Movements Mean Musicality Score by Condition and Major The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of coordinated kinesthetic movement on expressivity in an ensemble setting. Specifically, this study intended to answer the following research questions: (1) Will natural physical motion effect aural perception of ensemble expressivity? (2) Will a coordinated “Unified Kinesthetic” effect aural perception of ensemble expressivity? An excerpt from Gastoldi’s Amor Vittorioso was used. This piece was chosen based on the following criteria: (1) it was relatively unknown to participants; (2) it had homophonic texture; and (3) there were multiple opportunities for expressive interpretation. Selection of this piece was evaluated by an expert in the choral field who determined its validity. Performers were recorded singing through the excerpt under the following conditions: (1) no movement; (2) natural movement as determined by the individual singers; and (3) using a unified kinesthetic, which was taught to the performers after recording the first two conditions. Participants (N = 62) were asked to evaluate the excerpt on a number of musical elements under these performance conditions using a Likert-type scale. Results indicated significant differences in musicality scores between the no movement (M = 4.44, SD = 1.04) and natural movement (M = 4.09, SD = 1.13) conditions as well as between the unified kinesthetic (M = 4.60, SD = 0.96) and natural movement conditions (M = 4.09, SD = 1.13). There was also a significant musicality score by order interaction. Description of Unified Kinesthetic: Phrase One Measures 1-2: Move arms Back and forth- lean forward on beat 1 of measure 2. Phrase Two Measures 2-4: Repeat first phrase movements. Phrase Three Measures 5-8: “ping-pong” balls- bouncy light movements Means and Standard Deviations for Musicality Score by Condition Means and Standard Deviations for Individual Musical Elements by Condition Mean Musicality Score by Condition and Order
