  1. Sexually Transmitted Diseases • Any pathogen that spreads from one person to another during sexual contact.

  2. Facts • Many STD’s can be treated with medicines, but some are incurable. • If left untreated, some STD’s are fatal. • People do not develop immunity to STD’s after being infected. • A person can be cured, and then re-infected with the same STD. • It can take only one contact with an infected person to contract an STD.

  3. Risky Behaviors • Ignoring Risks • Multiple Partners • Not seeking treatment • You can develop more than one STD at a time

  4. Avoiding STD’s • Practice Abstinence (Best way to avoid STD’s) • Avoid Drugs (sharing needles/tattoo’s) • Choose Responsible Friends

  5. Practice Abstinence • The best and only way to avoid STD’s is to practice sexual abstinence. • Sexual abstinence means not having sexual intercourse, oral sex, or anal sex. • Even teens who have not been abstinent up to point can still choose abstinence now. • Teens that are sexually active should be tested for STD’s.

  6. Three most common STD’s • Trichomoniasis -Caused by a protozoan that infects the urinary tract or vagina. • Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) -Most common viral STD in the USA. • Chlamydia -Most common reported bacteria STD in the USA

  7. Friend For Life Virus Medications can help with symptoms but not cure disease No Cure: • Herpes Simplex 1 & 2 • HIV/AIDS • Genital Warts/HPV (50% of men 15+ are infected)

  8. Herpes • HSV 1, HSV 2 (Herpes Symplex Virus) • Not curable • HSV 1 – effects facial features • Not transmittable unless a sore is out (lips) • Valtrex – drug – stops it and sends it back, doesn’t stop the disease • HSV 2 – effects genitals • Genital herpes • Can be treated with antibiotics but is not curable

  9. HPV • Some forms of HPV cause genital warts, which may itch or burn. • A doctor can remove the warts, but some may reappear. • Sometimes the body’s immune system will destroy the virus, clearing the body of infection. • A vaccine is made for females, should get between the ages of 9-27 • Hangs out in the cervix and could cause cancer Cervical Cancer, get a Pap test before it become life threatening

  10. HPV

  11. Bacteria Can be cured with antibiotics • Gonorrhea • Syphilis • Chlamydia Even though there is a cure disease can still cause permanent damage

  12. Chlamydia • Has no symptoms • Causes problems with organs, joints and reproductive organs • Bacteria, treated with antibiotics • Infected males – experience painful, frequent urination and discharge from the penis. • If untreated may lead to urethritis. • In females-has no symptoms other than yellowish vaginal discharge.

  13. If untreated can cause a serious infection of the reproductive organs called pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). • Can lead to infertility or an ectopic pregnancy, a potentially fatal condition where fertilized egg implants somewhere other than in the uterus. • A pregnant woman can transmit Chlamydia to her baby during birth. If the infected infant survives, it may suffer damage to the lungs or eyes.

  14. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

  15. Syphilis • “Great Imitator” • Effects every organ in the body • Skin Legion that can get into other legions of the body • Can be passed from Mother to Child during childbirth • Can cause just about anything and destroy every organ/joint in the body • Caused by a bacteria known as “Spirochette” which also cause “Lyme disease” (carried by a tick)

  16. Syphilis

  17. Hepatitis • B and C, called HBV and HCV are sexually transmitted infections that attack the liver. • Also spread by blood-to-blood contact, often unaware of the infection • Symptoms include-fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea. • Medication may relieve symptoms but there is no cure. • Children are routinely vaccinated for HBV, no vaccine for HVC.

  18. Infestations • Pubic Lice • Crabs • Scabies

  19. Common Signs Of STI’s • Sores, bumps, or blisters near mouth or genitals • Burning or pain during urination or bowel movement • Flu-like symptoms, fever chills, or aches • Swelling in groin area or groin lymph nodes

  20. Females • Unusual odor, or discharge from vagina • Pelvic pain • Burning or itching around vagina • Unusual bleeding (not her period) • Pain during intercourse • Increased severity of menstrual cramps or abnormal period

  21. Males • Discharge from penis • Pain in testicles • Inflammation or pain from the head of the penis USE PROTECTION
