  1. Periodicals A-Z: From Citation to Text By Lauren Matacio, Instruction Librarian James White Library

  2. Let’s begin at the James White Library Website: www.andrews.edu/library Click on Articles/Databases This presentation will demonstrate how to find the text of an article using Periodicals A-Z

  3. The first citation we will look for is an article by Blake Harwell entitled, “Why Story,” from the March-April 1998 issue of Preaching. Click on Periodicals A-Z Specific Citation

  4. Just type the journal’s title and click on the search button.

  5. Now we have a list of journal titles beginning with Preaching. We can tell it’s the second title on the list because of the dates. We are looking for 1998. James White Library has this journal in its Print Holdings. Clicking on James White Print Holdings shows where the print copy is located in the library Article in JWL Print Holdings

  6. As a second example we have a citation for “Grandparent Visitation Rights” from the July 2005 issue of the Journal of Family Issues. Again we type in the title of the journal. The test of this journal is also available in full-text at the publisher’s Website. Click on Sage Premier. Article from Publisher’s Website

  7. From this screen we can follow the links one page at a time until we get to the actual article. First, search the archives for the publication year--2005. We need the July issue. Then scroll down to find the title of the article. For the full-text, click on PDF. Follow directions to print or download the article. Publisher’s Website

  8. The next example is an article available in full-text from a General Database. We will search for “Green Invaders on the Galapagos Islands” from the Nov. 9, 2001 issue of Science. First we need to enter the name of the journal in the search box. Full-text from General Database

  9. We can see that 2001 is available in Academic Search Premier. After selecting this database, follow the links to the full-text of the article. First click on the year and the issue, then scroll down to the article and click on the full-text link.

  10. To browse periodicals by discipline, click on the appropriate subject area. Select the desired journal title and follow the links. If online, browse the latest issue from your computer. Browsing Periodicals A-Z by Subject
