  1. Organic Molecules

  2. CHNOPS = elements of life

  3. Monomers • Simple organic molecules that exists individually or can link with other monomers • Examples: monosaccharide, amino acid, nucleotide

  4. Polymers • Many monomers linked together • Example: carbohydrates, protein, nucleic acid

  5. Carbohydrate • Monomer = monosaccharide • Elements: C, H, O • H:O=2:1

  6. Disaccharides

  7. Functions • Short-term energy storage • Starch and glycogen • Structure • Chitin and cellulose • Cell-to-cell recognition

  8. Nucleic Acids • Monomer = nucleotides • Elements: C, H, P, N O

  9. Nitrogenous Bases

  10. Phosphodiester bonds form between nucleotides to form nucleic acids

  11. Examples of Nucleic Acids • DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) • RNA (ribonucleic acid) • ATP (adenosine triphosphate)

  12. Proteins • Monomer = amino acids • Elements = C, H, O, N, S

  13. Alanine

  14. Lipids • Grouped together because have 1 thing in common • No affinity for water! • Elements: C, H, O, P (sometimes)

  15. Triglyceride

  16. Phospholipid

  17. Steroids

  18. Function • Energy storage (2x as much energy as carbs and proteins) • Structure • Cell membrane • Communication • Steroid hormones
