First Sergeant Nelson Gamio Operations Company, DHHB 1st Infantry Division A native of Los Angeles, California, SFC Gamio entered the United States Army on 6 October 1996, attending One Station Unit Training at Fort McClellan, Alabama as a Chemical Operations Specialist. Follow on assignments include: Smoke/Decontamination Specialist, 71st Chemical Company, 25th Infantry Division, Hawaii; CBRN Room NCO/Operations Sergeant, HQ&A Company, 25th Infantry Division, Hawaii; Squad Leader, 92nd Chemical Company, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart; Division CBRN Logistics NCO/Computer Plotter, Division Chemical, 2nd Infantry Division, Korea; CBRN Room Instructor, Decontamination Chief Instructor/Writer, HHC, 84th Chemical Battalion, Fort Leonard Wood; Platoon Sergeant, 4th Chemical Company, 2nd Infantry Division; Chemical Operations NCO, HHC, Eighth United States Army, Korea; PSD/Chemical Reconnaissance Platoon Sergeant/First Sergeant, HHC, 4-1 BSTB, 1st Infantry Division (OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM), Fort Riley; Brigade Chemical NCO, HHC, 4th IBCT, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Division Chemical Sergeant Major, Operations Company, DHHB; First Sergeant, Operations Company, DHHB, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley(OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM). SFC Gamio completed the following courses: OSUT; Warrior Leaders Course; Advanced Leaders Course; Senior Leaders Course; Air Assault Course; Anti-Terrorism Level II Course, Nuclear, Biological, Chemical Defense Course; Defense Hazardous Materials/Waste Handlers Course; Field Sanitation Course; Drop Zone Team Leader Course; Systems Approach to Training Course; Mobile Retention Training Course, Combat Lifesaver Course; Field Sanitation Course; Radiation Safety Course; Instructor Training Course and Advanced Platform Instruction; Instructor Supervisor Course. SFC Gamio holds an Associates Degree in General Studies and is currently pursuing a Bachelors Degree in Environmental Science. Awards include: Bronze Star Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster), Meritorious Service Medal (2nd Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal (1st Silver Leaf Cluster), Army Achievement Medal (2nd Silver Leaf Clusters), Army Good Conduct Medal (5th Award), National Defense Service Medal (Bronze Service Star), Afghanistan Campaign Medal (1st Campaign Star), Iraqi Campaign Medal (1st Campaign Star), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Non Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (Numeral 3), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (Numeral 6), NATO Medal (ISAF), Driver’s Badge, German Armed Forces Military Efficiency Badge (Bronze), Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster) and the coveted Air Assault Badge. SFC Gamio has received several non-traditional awards: Master Instructor Badge; Instructor of the Cycle; The Chemical Corps Honorable Order of the Dragon. Of all the awards and recognitions above, the one SFC Gamio holds the closest, is his membership in the elite Non Commissioned Officer Corps association – Sergeant Audie Murphy Club (SAMC), earning membership in 2002. SFC Gamio is married to CPT Yadira M. Gamio, currently serving as the HHC, 4-1 BSTB, Company Commander, and has one son, Andres (4).
