  1. System Maintenance Almost all Computer Systems need to go down from time to time for some kind of upgrade. Some services can’t have downtime! (or at least, not much)

  2. System Maintenance • What kind of upgrades? • Security Related • Not security related

  3. System Maintenance • Develop a checklist • What services are effected by the upgrade. • Who are the customers of each service • What provides the service?

  4. System Maintenance 2) Verify that the upgrade is compatible with all hardware/software currently in use on that machine (MSFT is BAD at this!) 3) Develop and run a plan to verify if the upgrade worked 4) Write an emergency backout plan 5) Select a maintenance window!

  5. System Maintenance 6) Announce the upgrade to people effected by any outages 7) Execute the upgrade, preferably with someone else present. 8) Repeat the test develop before 9) If something is wrong, execute back-out plan
