3. WHAT IS A SEA TURTLE? • Sea turtles are reptiles. • Sea turtles are the only species in the open ocean. • They have been on the earth for millions of years.

4. They are cold-blooded. • They have lungs and a three-chambered heart. • They lay eggs. • Sea turtles do not have teeth, but the jaw is sharp like a beak. • You cannot see the sea turtle’s ears. They have ear drums that are covered by skin. • Sea turtles have good vision underwater, but do not see well out of water.

5. How many species of sea turtles are there? • There are seven types of sea turtles.

6. Green Turtles • Leatherbacks • Hawksbill • Kemp’s Ridley

8. Where Do Sea Turtles Live? • Sea Turtles live in the Earth’s oceans. • They live way down in the ocean because that's where the food is.

9. The Life Cycle of the Sea Turtles • All animals go through changes called a life cycle. • Mother sea turtles dig a hole in the sand. • They lay 70 to 170 eggs in the sand for protection.

10. The Life Cycle continued. • Baby sea turtles hatch from the eggs Their mothers are not there when they hatch. The baby hatchlings go into the ocean where they search for food and grow into adults.

HOW ARE SEA TURTLES AND LAND TURTLES DIFFERENT ? • Sea turtles and land turtles are not the same. • Sea turtles have narrow shells for swimming, and flippers instead of legs. • They are strong swimmers and deep divers. • They can stay under water for up to five hours (green turtles). • Sea turtles cannot pull their heads or flippers into their shells like land turtles can to protect themselves from predators.

13. Health and Disease Sea Turtles have long lives. Most Sea Turtles live 15 to 20 years. Some can live to be 80 years old. Sometimes they get sick because of pollution in the seas. The diseases that the turtles can get are really , really bad. They can loose their shells. They can loose their flippers and other body parts.

14. What’s interesting about sea turtles? • Sea turtles often do swim to the surface to breath every few minutes. • When they are resting they remain under water for hours. • Sea turtles have really soft skin. • They are really good swimmers.

Turtles As Pets • Sea turtles need salt water if you want to have them as a pet. • But you can have a land turtle as a pet because all you need is regular water. • It is good to have turtles because they are nice to have in your house and they are very playful. And you can learn a lot about turtles.

16. Handle With Care! Sea turtles are very fragile. All sea turtles are protected by the Endangered Species Act.
