  3. What is a Butterfly? Butterflies are beautiful, flying insects with large scaly wings. Like all insects, they have six jointed legs, 3 body parts, a pair of antennae, compound eyes, and an exoskeleton.

  5. Stage 1The Egg A butterfly starts it’s life as an egg.

  6. Stage 2Larva or Caterpillar The larva (caterpillar) hatches from the egg and eats leaves and flowers almost constantly.

  7. Stage 3Pupa or Chrysalis It turns into a pupa (chrysalis). This is the resting stage.

  8. Stage 4 A Butterfly A beautiful, flying adult butterfly emerges!!!!!

  11. What do Butterflies Eat? Adult butterflies sip nectar from flowers through their tongues, which act like straws.

  12. How Long Does A Butterfly Live? An adult butterflies average life span is about two weeks or less.

Interesting Butterfly Facts • As caterpillars grow they shed their skin. • In North America there are over 700 species of butterflies. • All butterflies have six legs and feet.  • Butterflies prefer flowers that are pink, yellow, red, or purple and have single petals. • Butterflies taste their food through their feet not their proboscis.
