  3. Transitions in a nutshell • Words or phrases used in sentences to LEAD reader through your writing • Transitions are about relationships • How does this relate to that? • Is it similar? Different? Does it follow that one?

  4. Misconceptions • Transitions are not necessarily different from topic sentences • Think of them as TS version 2.0 • They're combined together • TS + Transition • (But don't have to be)

Transitional Words & Phrases • Really comes down to 3 relationships: • Similarity/Dissimilarity [CDs] • in the same way, on the other hand, despite, in contrast • Order/Cause & Effect [CDs] • at the same time, later, finally, thus, therefore, accordingly, because, • Reminders [CD or CS] • as has been said, on the whole

Topic Sentence Examples • THESIS: The American Dream is not attainable for all citizens, no matter how hard they work for it. • Body pp1 TS: Racism prevents people of different ethnicities from getting a fair chance • Body pp2 TS: Sexism prevents women from getting a fair chance • RELATIONSHIP = Similarity • Body pp2 TS w/ transition: In the same way that racism prevents people of different ethnicities from getting a chance to succeed, sexism also prevents women from getting a fair chance to succeed...

  18. Did You Notice? • All of the words & phrases required you to add information from previous paragraphs • It's the Hamburger Helper of writing • NOTE: You need to be able to say what your paragraphs are about before you can use the transitions

  19. Some Things to Consider • Organization is key • Unorganized = no relationships • Topic Sentences • No topic sentence should appear w/out a transition word or phrase* • *Except first body pp after intro

Transitions Review • Transitions are all about ____________. • What are the 3 main types of transitions you will use in your SP? • Why are transitions like Hamburger Helper? • You should never use Firstly, ______, or ________ in your SP. • Which body paragraph(s) would you add a transition phrase in front of: pp#1, pp#2, and/or pp#3?

  21. Assignment • Step #1: Highlight all topic sentences • Step #2: Look at TS and the TS from the pp before it • Step #3: Figure out their relationship • Step #4: Revise the TS (not the one from previous pp) • Step #4: Repeat!
