Regulatory expectations (WP2.1) WP2.1 Context: Responsibilities of the Regulatory Body Requirement 2 of IAEA SSR-5: The regulatory body shall a.o.: • establishregulatory requirementsfor the development of different types of disposal facility for radioactive waste • undertake international cooperation, as necessary, to fulfil its regulatory functions • provide guidanceon: • the interpretation of the national legislation and regulatory requirements as necessary • what is expected of the operator GEOSAF II TM – SITEX WP2.1 – 28/05/2014

Conclusions • WP2.1 was mainly aimed at: • fostering mutual understanding and dialogue between NSAs, TSOs and WMOs • identifying and anticipating the needs for technical guidance • Safety requirements, technical guides and needs associated with the construction, operation & closure of a GDF have been identified • Deliverable soon available GEOSAF II TM – SITEX WP2.1 – 28/05/2014 26
