  2. Background • As a child, Henry Ford always had an interest in mechanics, machinery, and how things worked. • Growing up, Ford had many opportunities to explore the mechanical world. He learned how to fix steam engines and run mill operations, but his main focus was on internal combustion engines. • Cars were mostly luxury items at the time and were very expensive. • In 1891, Ford became an engineer with the Edison Illuminating Company.

Road to Wealth • Ford recognized that with the right technique, cars could be made more affordable for the general public. • In 1893, Ford was promoted to Chief Engineer, where he had much more time to work on personal experiments. • Fords first vehicle was called the Quadricycle. • 1901, the Henry Ford Company was created but Ford himself did not stay with it for very long. • In 1903, the first Ford was sold in Detroit. • Henry Ford made the manufacturing process more efficient so he could produce more cars and charge less for each.

Treatment of the Workers • Ford created the $5 workday and created programs to teach employees how to use this amount of money responsibly. • H encouraged high standards of cleanliness and safety. • Ford opposed labor unions because he believed that he and his company should be responsible for their own workers and meeting their needs. • Henry Ford hired disabled veterans, making his company one of the first companies to hire people with disabilities.

  5. Money • Henry Ford created the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Throughout his whole life he gave this hospital about 14 million dollars. • Ford gave away about 33% of his income, in his lifetime. • He built a trade school in Detroit and a school for African Americans in Georgia. • Ford created the Ford Foundation in 1936 to promote human welfare.

Captain of Industry • Henry Ford was not cruel or inhuman to the common man. • He used smart, fair business practices. • He treated his workers with respect and did all he could to accommodate them. • He paid his workers $5, which was twice the salary of other workers in other industries. • Ford promoted education and was a major philanthropist. He donated money to build hospitals and much more.
