  1. Multiple Intelligences Lesson Plan By: Ashley Swanson Subject: Anthropology, sociology, and psychology Grade Level: 4th grade Culture

  2. Goals: • Students will understand the diversity of cultures within the world today. • Students will understand the expressions of the arts within the differing cultures. • Students will understand the differences in languages, art, music, media, stories, etc. and the expressions with.

  3. Objectives: • Content/Knowledge: • Analyze different topics about different cultural expressions. • Process/Skills: • Students will be able to analyze important documents. • Values/Dispositions: • Students will be able to analyze and evaluate the difference in expression of cultures; such as, art, music, etc.

  4. Rationale: • I want students to understand the difference in cultures. I want students to be able to notice why people express topics in the way they do; such as in, art, music, stories, language, etc.

  5. Logical/Mathematical- “Logic Smart” • Teaching: I am going to teach students about the different language that people can speak within their language as well as the importance of language within a culture. • Activity: Students will find a link below about language. I am going to have students read the link and evaluate the information within the link. I am going to have students write a paragraph about the importance of language expression within the culture. • Materials: computer, internet access, paper, pencil • Resources: http://www.vistawide.com/languages/language_statistics.htm

Visual/Spatial- “Picture Smart” • Teaching: I am going to teach students the different types of art there is in a culture to allow them to understand that there are other culture’s than their own. • Activity: Students are going to find a piece of art from two cultures. They are going to analyze what the picture is illustrating. Students are going to write a paragraph reflecting what they think the picture is representing. Then, they are going to research the meaning of the picture. Students are going to write another paragraph reflecting on the difference between what they thought the picture meant vs. what the picture really means. • Materials: computer, paper, pencil, internet access • Resources: Delicious bookmarks in the additional resources as well as other links

Musical/Rhythmic- “Music Smart” • Teaching: Students are going to learn about the arts in difference culture and the reason why culture express them differently. • Activity: Students are going to find two pieces of music from two different cultures. They are going to evaluate the meaning of each song. They are going to research the reason why the culture express the song the way they do. • Materials: paper, pencil, computer, internet access • Resources: Refer to delicious bookmarks

  13. Body/Kinesthetic- “Body Smart” • Teaching: I am going to teach students about the varying types of dance different cultures experience. This will allow my students to notice that although dance is similar to every culture; they each experience a different way of dancing. • Activity: In groups of five students are going to research a dance in a different culture from their own. They are going to choreograph a dance utilizing music from the culture. They are going to present their dance at family night. • Materials: Pen, pencil, computer, internet access, CD player, • Resources: Refer to delicious bookmarks

Naturalist- “Nature Smart” • Teaching: I am going to teach students about the different parts of the United States cultures exist. • Activity: Students are going to draw a map illustrating where all of the ten cultures are within the United States. They should draw a picture related to the culture within the area that it exist. • Materials: coloring devices, computer, internet access and paper • Resources: Delicious bookmarks in the additional resources

  17. Interpersonal- “People Smart” • Teaching: I am going to teach students that culture are very similar but so different. I am going to teach this through making the students compare two central traditions in a culture. • Activity: Students are going to research the Chinese New Year compared to the United States New Year. They are going to write a one page paper reflecting on the differences and similarities amongst the traditions within the culture. • Materials: internet access, pencils, paper, computer • Resources: Delicious bookmarks in the additional resources

Intrapersonal- “Self-Smart” • Teaching: I am going to teach students about the different cultures as well as the customs that are within. • Activity: In groups of two, students are going to choose a culture and investigate many questions in regards to their culture of choose; such as, what food they eat, clothing they wear as well as music. They are going to make a poster board reflecting their culture and will present the information they found about the culture. • Material: Poster board, internet access, computer, and pencils • Resource: Refer to the delicious bookmarks for more information

  20. “Verbal/Linguistic”:

Verbal/Linguistic- “Word Smart” • Teaching: I am going to teach students about the different documents/laws that enable people to make chooses within their culture. • Activity: Students are going to research a law or document protecting the rights of individuals culture. hey are going to write a half page paper summarizing this law and tell the importance of the law in relation to protecting peoples rights. • Materials: Paper, pencil, internet access, computer • Resources: Refer to delicious bookmarks

  22. Assessment: • Students are going to reflect on the importance of expression within a culture. They are going to choose one culture and write a paper reflecting on the difference between the culture they choose and their own.
