  1. Waste Stream Generation/Reduction/Treatment Industry Report Sodium Bisulfite Production By Rob Olsen

  2. It all Starts With Sulfur • Molten Sulfur is unloaded from railcars • This liquid Sulfur is injected into a furnace • This furnace has a large air intake • The now vaporized sulfur mixes with the air to create sulfur dioxide • This new mixture passes into the first of two cooling towers

  3. Cooling is cool • Water is injected into the SO2 to cool down the mixture from 2400°F to 180°F • From there the mixture enters the second cooling tower • Again, water is injected to further reduce the temperature from 180°F to 90°F

  4. What’s a Little Mixing Between Friends? • This now cooled and liquid SO2 is mixed with a weak Soda Ash Solution

  5. The Chemistry • 2So2 + H2O + Na2CO3 = 2NaHSAO3 + CO2

  6. Waste Stream • CO2 is the main byproduct • It comes from two sources: • A). Byproduct of combustion (furnace) • B). Byproduct of the break-up of the Soda Ash Solution

  7. Waste Uses • CO2 can be used to produce: • Dry Ice • Carbonated water in the soda industry • Fire extinguishers • Anti-oxidizing agent for the welding industry • Carbonic acid for the electroplating industry • Caffeine, CO2 is used to decaffeinate coffee • The oil exploration industry

  8. Best of All – CO2 Uses • It can be mixed with limonene from orange peels to produce a polymer that can be used to make plastic • Now That’s Green

  9. Why it matters • The EPA has proposed a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, at top of their list is CO2. • Companies will be limited to 25,000 tons per year in CO2 emissions. • Permit required - This may be like the difference between a Small Quantity Generator (SQG) and a Large Quantity Generator (LQG) status, with 10,000 tons being the cut-off
