  3. Background • National Strategy for Local Government e-gov@local published April – finalised November 2002 • Identified the development of national projects • Building on LGOL pathfinder projects • Dissemination of best practice • Building blocks for e-Government

National Projects Programme • Government intends to ‘pull together existing LGOL pathfinder and other pilots into national projects’ • National projects will seek to develop common standards and generic solutions… • National projects will create ‘products’ ready for take-up by local government

  6. National Smartcard Project • Initiative arose from ODPM and LGOL Pathfinders • All local authorities were encouraged to register an interest • First meeting held end of May 2002 • Engaged more than 30 local authorities and organisations

  7. How did we get here? • Creation of framework proposal • Agreed to develop 10 work packages • Lead authority for each work package identified • First draft proposal submitted to ODPM in June 2002, final draft submitted mid October 2002 • Overall funding approx £4m approved March 2003
