Lesson 1 • 1733 Molasses Act – placed a tax on sugar and molasses that was used to make rum – a major money maker for the colonists • could only trade with British West Indies Islands - this helped the plantation owners there • 1754-1763 French and Indian War – colonists and British fought together against the French and many Indians • they fought over land

  3. Lesson 2 • 1763 Proclamation – stated the colonists could not move westward over the Appalachian Mountains • 1764 – law passed that stated colonists could not print or use their own money • 1765 Stamp Act – a law that stated tax be placed on 54 kinds of papers including playing cards, newspapers, wills and licenses • James Otis (Boston lawyer) said “No taxation without representation • 1767 Townshend Acts – placed a tax on tea, glass, paper and paint • Many colonists refused to pay the taxes or to buy any goods made in England

  4. Lesson 3 • Sons of Liberty was formed • Traders smuggled goods in and out of the American ports to keep from paying taxes. • Many settlers moved across the Appalachian Mountains even though it was against the law.

Lesson 4 • 1770 Boston Massacre – 1st real battle between the colonists and the British • British soldiers got angry when the colonists threw snowballs at them. • 1773 Boston Tea Party – happened because the Americans refused to buy or unload tea that came from the British East India Company • 50 Sons of Liberty (including Paul Revere) dressed like Mohawk Indians and poured 342 chests valued at $75,000 into the harbor

  6. Lesson 5 • 1774 (September) First Continental Congress – - decided to force the British to repeal the acts - and to cut off all trade between the English and the colonies • Georgia was the only colony that did not send anyone to the meeting at Carpenter’s Hall in Philadelphia

  7. Lesson 6 • 1775 – Paul Revere warned the colonists that the British were coming • First shot fired at Lexington • Called “the shot heard ‘round the World” • started the war • Minutemen – Colonist who began to arm themselves • They could be ready to fight in a minute

  8. Lesson 7 • Bunker Hill • Colonial army lost 140 men • Nearly 1000 British were killed or wounded • British won this battle at “Breeds” Hill

Lesson 8 British • Government stronger • Lots of money • Many officers • British navy ruled the seas • Fighting 3000 miles away from home • Had to ship men and supplies Colonists • No government yet • No money • Few officers with experience • France sent money and trained officers • No navy • Fighting at home • Took longer for English to soldiers over here

Lesson 9 • 1775 Continental Congress • Voted -- • To ask each colony to give war supplies and troops • To ask France to help • Washington in as Commander-in-Chief of army • Hessians • Soldiers from Germany • Hired by King George • Money paid to Prince of Hesse for every soldier killed or wounded

Lesson 10 • 1776 Common Sense – pamphlet written by Thomas Paine • It said all kings are bad • 1775 Declaration of Independence • Committee appointed to write it • John Adams – Massachusetts, Ben Franklin (sick) – Pennsylvania, Roger Sherman – Connecticut, Robert Livingston – New York, • Thomas Jefferson – Virginia • Wrote it • Signed on July 4, 1776

  12. Lesson 11 • 1776 • Nathan Hale – hanged for treason • Mary Ludwig – brought cool water for the soldiers to drink • Nicknamed “Molly Pitcher” by the soldiers • Given $40 a year pension from the government for her service

  13. Lesson 12 • 1776 American Flag • 13 stripes – red and white • 13 stars of white on a blue field • Betsy Ross is thought to be the one who sewed the 1st flag

  14. Lesson 13 • 1775 Green Mountain Boys – attacked British Fort Ticonderoga near Lake Champlain • Led by Ethan Allan • Won • 1776 Dorchester Heights – cannons were brought to a hill overlooking the Boston Harbor • 6000 British left without a fight

  15. Lesson 14 • 1776 Trenton, New Jersey • Washington crosses the icy Delaware River on Christmas Eve to launch a surprise attack • Hessians surrendered themselves, their weapons and equipment • 1777 Saratoga, New York • Americans beat a large British force • French decided to help by supplying money, arms and officers

  16. Lesson 15 • 1780 • Battles of Kings Mountain and Cowpens fought • Benedict Arnold • Won major battle for colonists • Turned traitor • Cornwallis surrendered his army after being surrounded by American colonists and the French • 1781 • War ended after 6 years • 1783 • Treaty of Paris was signed • Marked the official end of the war in the eyes of Britain
