  2. Where are we? Taiwan is slightly larger than the combined area of Maryland and Delaware, and about one sixth of Minnesota.

  6. Brief History of the Department • The Department of Chemical Engineering was established in 1931 as the Department of Applied Chemistry. • The Department has offered the Bachelor of Science, Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. • Current enrollment as Academic Year 2005–2006: • 530 Undergraduates • 203 MS students • 101 PhD students • The Department has 36 full-time faculty members and 13 adjunct members.

Objectives for Undergraduate Program The overall goal of our educational programs is to challenge our students to maximize their potential, motivation and competence in their careers throughout their lives. In particular, we aim to inspire our students to • Obtain the necessary and fundamental knowledge as well as technical capability in the practice of chemical engineering;

Objectives for Undergraduate Program • Develop effective communication skills, both oral and written, and exercise their competence, creativity, and imagination inresearches and resolving problems arising from applications to real-world engineering problems; • Develop the necessary attributes for constructive participation in and leadership of interdisciplinary teams and for knowledge integration; • Understand and appreciate the ethical responsibilities entailed in the professions and engineering practice, and envisage the global development and views.

  9. Curriculum • Undergraduate Program requires at least 145 semester hours of course credit. • M.S. Program needs at least 24 semester hours of course credit, in addition to the MS thesis and satisfactory seminar participation. • Ph.D. program: • Must pass the Ph.D. qualifying examination within the first three years from their initial enrollment in the Ph.D. program. • Minimal requirements: at least 18 semester hours of course credit, in addition to the Ph.D. dissertation and satisfactory seminar participation, beyond the MS degree.

  10. Specialty Program Undergraduates could be conferred with Specialty Certificate upon their successful completion and fulfillments of requirements by each specialty program. Currently four specialty programs are offered: • Biotechnology and biochemical engineering, • Optoelectronic materials and nanotechnology, • Polymer materials and engineering, and • Process and system engineering.
