  3. MS WORD Students: Sheryl, Ted 1)Descartes claims that the proposition “I am, I exist” is necessarily true whenever he conceives it. Has he adequately justified this by his prior meditation Descartes argues that it is an all-powerful demon deceiving him into believing everything false around him. Moreover, this demon is also putting misleading or false thoughts into our heads. However, Descartes has by saying this, conveniently shot himself in the foot. The concern is, what if the very argument that Descartes is making is a deceiving notion being put by the all-powerful demon into Descartes’s head? Why would the Demon do this? To achieve what Descartes said the demon wants to do, deceive us. Moving on, if it is really the demon that is putting these notions into Descartes’s head then the doubts Descartes has about what he was taught or things around him may in fact be false. Hence can we then say that everything around Descartes is necessarily true? No. The demon is like Descartes says only attempting to deceive us, not making us believe the opposite of every possible certain thing around us. Descartes may in fact be winning a small part of the battle in not being deceived by the demon while losing the major part. Hence Descartes is able to raise a doubt on almost everything around him but not everything. However, one can then ask, how do we decide between what the demon has deceived us into believing and what is in fact true? We don’t. Just like Descartes did, we raise a doubt about it. In fact a doubt clearly exists, since if I can prove something, how do I know if the method I used to prove that was a deception put together by the demon to make me believe something that is in fact completely false or on the other hand the demon had nothing to do with it and what we proved is in fact true? Descartes aims to solve the problem of deception by taking over the difficult task of not listening to his senses at all. However, Descartes cannot get rid of his thoughts, which the demon does as Descartes himself agrees have access to.
