WI Natural Resources Board October 23, 2019 Webcast

This webcast discusses the need to update site-specific criteria (SSC) for Castle Rock, Petenwell, and Lake Wisconsin to reduce excessive algae blooms caused by high phosphorus levels. The goal is to improve water quality and make the lakes more enjoyable for recreation.

  2. Recommended Site Specific Criteria (SSC) • Current criteria overly restrictive for Castle Rock and Petenwell but not protective enough for Lake Wisconsin. • Currently, the reservoirs average 100 µg/L of total phosphorus resulting in excessive algae blooms. Adoption of the SSC still requires reductions in existing phosphorus loads and is NOT increasing phosphorus loading over current rates. 3. Meeting the Algae Benchmark • The ultimate goal is to reduce algae so people want to recreate on these lakes! • All these criteria will allow that benchmark to be met. • DNR’s study showed that the level of phosphorus to meet that benchmark varies for these 3 lakes.
