    • Complex

  • Sarah, excited for her sleepover, rushed to finish packing her bag, which was over-full, and she called Anna to confirm that she still needed to bring Oreos.

    • Compound-Complex

  • George is nice and he is willing to listen.

    • Compound

    • A single independent clause

  • What makes a compound sentence?

    • Two independent clauses, connected with a conjunction

  • What makes a complex sentence?

    • One independent clause & one dependent clause

    • Two independent clauses, a dependent clause & a conjunction

What’s the Difference?

  • We’ve heard the term clause used with sentence types. There are two kinds. What are they?

    • Independent & Dependent

  • What’s the difference between the two types of clauses?

    • Independent clauses can act as simple sentences, while dependent clauses have to be attached to an independent clause.

  • So what’s the difference between a phrase & a clause?

    • A phrase is just a chunk of words, it doesn’t determine sentence type.
