Departments involved in the production of vital statistics • The Central Civil Status office for the computerised events • The Central Statistics Office for the coding, editing of vital records and the production and dissemination of digests and indicators • The Central Information Systems Division (CISD) for the processing of the data

  4. The Statistics • Vital statistics are compiled on a monthly basis with a lag of 1-2 months • The statistics are used for: • Population estimation • Calculation of social indicators • Calculation of life tables

  5. Dissemination strategies • Quick dissemination tool: Economic and social indicators on population and vital statistics - twice yearly • The Digest of Demographic Statistics (more comprehensive), Annual Digest, Mauritius in Figures and Report of the Civil Status Office Hard copy of publications available at the office and soft copy on the CSO website at http://statsmauritius.gov.mu

  6. Dissemination strategies • A calendar of publication posted on the web in advance for users • Strict compliance to the calendar of publication especially for the economic and social indicators • Reasons given for late publications on web

  7. Main Problems • No IT professionals in the office to help with problems associated with data processing and tabulations • Totally dependent on the Central Informatics System Department which has limited resources • At times requests for new tabulations takes much time

  8. Plans for improvement • The Central Statistics Office has recruited an IT Manager to work for the e-business plan of the office. • Implementation of an IT action plan consisting of investments in centralised database and analysis technology

  9. Vital Statistics are expected to benefit through: • Reduction of manual capture • Reduction of manual validation • Advanced analysis capabilities • Advanced reporting facilities
