  1. Developing Effective Presentation Skills

  2. Public Speaking The Bible is filled with people who God called to speak on His behalf, but who were unsure of their own abilities to do so. “If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very word of God.” 1 Peter 4: 11 (NIV)

  3. Maintain the Focus The mission of Operation Christmas Child is to demonstrate God's love in a tangible way to needy children around the world, and together with the local church worldwide, to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.

  4. Know Your Audience In what ways will the audience’s level of experience with OCC affect how they relate to your message? Who might your audience be?

  5. Building Trust and Rapport “He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it. “ Titus 1:9 (NIV) • Interact with your audience if at all possible. • Use stories and appropriate humor. • Make yourself available for questions after your presentation. • Participate as much as possible in the event where you are presenting.

  6. Using Energy and Emotion Effective presenters connect with the emotions of their audience. If you are feeling it, show it! When you mask your emotions, you often sacrifice your authenticity with your audience.

  7. Body Language “Effective communication is 20% what you know and 80% what you feel about what you know.” Jim Rohn “What you do speaks so loud that I cannot hear what you say.” Ralph Waldo Emerson 76,087 Results in books on Amazon.com 55%-65% Of our communication comes from body language

  8. Eye Contact • Try to make eye contact with as many people as you can. • Don’t force eye contact or make it robot-like. • If you are speaking to a large auditorium, the “sweet spot” is about 2/3 of the way back towards the center. • Don’t use your PowerPoint slides as your notes. • Train yourself to look between people if you need to look away. • Make eye contact even with those who aren’t smiling at you or nodding in agreement. • Do not roll your eyes at any time while speaking unless it is obvious that you are using humor. “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.” Matthew 6:22 (NIV)

  9. Gestures

  10. Movement Trust and connection increase as distance decreases. Four Zones of Personal Space: __________ or more is PUBLIC SPACE __________ is SOCIAL SPACE ___________ is PERSONAL SPACE ___________ is INTIMATE SPACE 12 ft. 4-12 ft. 1.5-4 ft. 0-1.5 ft.

  11. Breathing “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.” Psalm 33:6 (NIV) “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord.” Psalm 150:6 (NIV)

  12. Voice Inflection POWER: • Power is not the same thing as volume. • Having vocal power is much more than just how loud you are. • Power is about projecting, not shouting. PAUSE: • Pauses help both you and your audience. • Pauses allow your audience to take in and process what you are saying. You know what you’re talking about, but your audience may be hearing it for the first time. They need time to commit it to memory. • Pauses also give you a moment to breathe as we’ve discussed. PACE: • Pace is the speed at which you speak. • Slow down as you make a key point. • As we discussed previously about breathing, if you find yourself speakingtoo fast, you probably are not stopping enough to breathe. PITCH: • You use pitch when you speak, just as when you sing. Speaking pitches are random, informally ordered, and usually shorter than sung pitches. • Varying your pitch can help you emphasize different parts of what you are saying. • If you find your pitch is too high and your voice sounds thin, strained, or squeezed, try breathing deeper.

  13. Filler Words Fill your presentation with meaningful, impactful content not with filler words!

  14. Coping with nervousness “When you step in front of an audience, allow yourself to experience your nervousness. Allow yourself to feel. Shutting down your emotions in an attempt to ‘pull yourself together’ will disconnect you from your audience. Suppressing your nervousness will also suppress other emotions that add life and authenticity to your message.” Brian Owen 75% of people have anxiety about public speaking

  15. Gaining Confidence as a Speaker “You are the only person on earth who can use your ability.” -ZigZiglar “Each time we face our fear, we gain strength, courage, and confidence in the doing.” -Anonymous

  16. What to Do if Disaster Strikes KEEP GOING! • Your audience will sympathize with you. • Your audience still wants to hear your presentation. • You will feel better if you keep going. • The disruption could give you a chance to connect with your audience.
