WHAT THE COMMITTEE HAS DONE SO FAR:

  • Exploratory research on the Mamanua and Manobo as well as school costs

  • Established criteria for selection of the scholar

  • Identified scholars

  • Created the brochure and powerpoint presentation

  • Web posting

CRITERIA FOR THE SELECTION OF THE SCHOLAR

  • Candidate must:

  • Be 100% full-blooded Mamanua/Manobo

  • Be native and resident of Surigao Norte/Surigao Sur

  • Come from a poor or indigent family

  • Be in good health

  • Have no record of any disciplinary action in school or in the community

  • Submit certification of good moral character from his/her high school

CRITERIA FOR THE SELECTION OF THE SCHOLAR

  • Candidate must:

  • Submit his/her report cards for 3rd year and 4th year, up to the 3rd quarter

  • Submit 2 recommendation letters from his/her English and Math teachers

  • Write an essay on why he/she wants to go to college and, after graduation, what he/she would like to do for his/her tribe

  • Be willing to do at least 2 years of service to his tribe after graduation

  • Do an interview with the USAA’s designated representative.

THE USAA MAMANUA SCHOLAR:

GINA Y. HUKMAN

  • 18 years old

  • Youngest of 2 children

  • Father: Cain Hukman—a farmer and the tribe’s dakula

  • Mother: Bebiana Yubos—a housekeeper

  • High school graduate (March 2003)

  • Attended leadership seminars in Butuan, Agusan

  • She wants to become a teacher

  • Tribe: Cantogas of the Lake Mainit Area

THE USAA MANOBO SCHOLAR:

LUCIL V. GARDIGO

  • 17 years old

  • Eldest child

  • Father: Lucas T. Gardigo—a rice farmer

  • Mother: Cecilia Gardigo--deceased

  • High school graduate (March 2003)

  • 3rd honors of her graduating class

  • She wants to become a teacher

  • Tribe: Carromata, San Miguel, Surigao del Sur
