Hilliard City Schools 2013-2014 6th Grade Scheduling • 6th Grade Information • School day begins at 7:30 am (tardy bell) and ends 2:10 pm. • School doors open at 7:20 am. • Breakfast is served from 7:20 am - 7:28 am • There are 5 (five) teams of 6th grade students. Each team size is an average of 110 students. • The first week of school is scheduled with get to know you activities, team building, character building and good study/organization habits. • Student recognition all year! • Good Conductor Awards • Honor Roll / Merit Roll • Straight A’s • AIM Awards (Achieving Improved Marks) • Addition team rewards and incentives • Extracurricular Activities after school & other special events all year!

  3. 6th Grade Sample Schedule Hilliard City Schools 2013-2014 6th Grade Scheduling Period 1 Language Arts 6 • Key Points: • 7 academic periods in a day • Each academic period will be 54 minutes in length. • Students will have 4 core content periods and up to 2 elective periods. • The 6th grade building schedules create more opportunities for targeted intervention, targeted enrichment, expanded course offerings, and teacher collaboration. • Students will have more elective options allowing them to explore more interests. Hilliard City Schools 2013-2014 6th Grade Scheduling 6th Grade Courses Language Arts • Language Arts 6 or LEAP 6* (2 periods) Mathematics Math 6 or Pre-Algebra All students are required to take one course from each of the core content areas. Science Science 6 Social Studies Social Studies 6 Intervention Math Extensions°* Reading Extensions°* Electives • Art° 21st Century Skills° • STEM° Physical Education° • iTopics° Music in Action° Band Strings Choir Students may request as many electives as needed to fulfill their required 6 total units ° — denotes a trimester course; all other courses are year-long courses * — students assigned to this course based on academic need

Four (4) of theses units must be made up of courses from the Core Academic areas listed below. • Required Courses • X Language Arts 6 (306000) 1.0 units • X Math 6 (506000) or 1.0 unit • Pre-Algebra (500020)* 1.0 unit • *Students must have a 5th Grade Math Winter MAP RIT score of 245+ • X Science 6 (556000) 1.0 unit • X Social Studies 6 (606000) 1.0 unit

  7. Students will have the opportunity to have up to two (2) periods for elective courses.Elective courses are offered as either one trimester (12 weeks) or full year courses. It is important to note that requesting elective courses does not guarantee enrollment in those courses as final placement in elective courses will be based on student academic needs and staffing availability. Hilliard City Schools 2013-2014 6th Grade Scheduling Full Year Electives Orchestra #657000 Orchestra is open to all students who are interested in learning to play and perform on a violin, viola, cello or bass. Band #655000 Band is open to all students who are interested in learning to play and perform on a wind or percussion instrument. Choir #656000 A full year course designed to provide an atmosphere for the enjoyment, appreciation and performance of all types of choral music. Hilliard City Schools 2013-2014 6th Grade Scheduling Trimester Electives STEM #216000 STEM is designed for students who are considering middle and high-school course work, which can lead to exciting and rewarding careers. Physical Education #456000 This class provides daily activities that allow improvement in the areas of muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, agility and balance. • iTopics #609000 • iTopics is a project based course in which students will work collaboratively to explore a variety of Historical Events. • Music in Action #659000 • Music in Action offers students the opportunities to use a hands-on learning approach to music. Art #106000 Students will explore different types of 2-D and 3-D Art. 21st Century Skills #201000 21st Century Skills provides students with skills needed to succeed in the future. Hilliard City Schools 2013-2014 6th Grade Scheduling • Intervention • A number of intervention opportunities will be available for students based on OAA data, MAP data, and/or teacher recommendation. • Please note, these intervention courses are not requested by students/parents, rather, they are scheduled for students based on the academic criteria listed above. • Students may be placed in/removed from the math/reading extensions courses throughout the year based on their current academic progress.
