  2. Project Overview Space Exploration Second graders are passionate about space and are conducting their own ‘space exploration’ by reading about and researching the planets, the moon phases, our solar system, fractions, day and night and the seasons!

I Can: • Make new observations when there is disagreement among initial observations.  • Draw pictures and write brief descriptions that correctly portray key features of an object.  • Investigate by observing and then describe that some events in nature have a repeating pattern, such as seasons, day and night, and migrations. Reading Connections Pushing Up the Sky Noise Level 1 • Monday • Discuss the Talk About It on page 194. • Read Why Sun and Moon Live in the Skyon pages 196 and 197 to learn the new vocabulary words. • Tuesday • Focus: Vocabulary and Problem and Solution • Read Pushing Up the Skyon pages 198-211. • Wednesday • Focus: ending and base words • Continue reading Pushing Up the Skyon pages 198-211. • Begin the comprehension packet for Pushing Up the Sky. • Thursday • Focus: Writing a play for our Space Night • Finish reading Pushing Up the Skyon pages 198-211. • Continue working on comprehension packet. Friday • Finish the comprehension packet for Pushing Up the Skyand turn into the reading file. Materials Needed Treasures Book, Pencils, Comprehension Packets Project Connection: Planets, Space, Moon phases

I Can: • Participate in shared research and writing projects • Research using books and technology • Write and deliver a research report Writing:Research for Space Project Noise Level 1 • Monday • Find a book in the station tub that has information about space that interests you. Read the book quietly. • Tuesday • Begin gathering information about a space topic and write the information in your own words in your research organizer. Be sure to record where you got your information. • Wednesday • Continue your space research. • Thursday • Begin writing a paragraph about your space topic using information from your research. • Friday • Complete your paragraph and turn in to the writing file. Materials Needed: Pencil, Paper, Computer, Space books Project Connection: Planets, Space, Moon phases

Self-Selected Reading/Accelerated Reader • I Can • Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension Noise Level 0 Choose a library book or a book of choice that you have not read. Be sure you picked a book that you can read alone. Silently read . After you finish your book, write the name of the book in your Data Binder. Be sure to fill in the information about your book in your binder. If you can answer all the questions in your Data Binder, get your laptop and log on to AR to take your test. Record your AR score in your Data Binder. • Materials Needed • Data binder • Book of choice

  7. Math Journal • I Can: • Add and subtract one and two digit numbers. • Tell time to the nearest 5 minutes. Noise Level 1 • Monday- Thursday • Complete any unfinished journal pages from chapters 7 and 8. These include pages 161-208. • Complete the skills link packet and turn in to the Math file. Materials Needed Math Journal, Math Skills packet, Pencil Project Connection: Review
