  1. The Anglo-Saxons • In A.D. 410 a new people came to Britain in ships across the North Sea. • People from: • North Germany • Denmark • North Holland • These tribes were called Angles, Jutes and Saxons. We call them “Vikings” or “Danes”

  2. KINGS • War Chief – became King • Ruled a kingdom and led a small army • 5 Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms: • Northumbria • Mercia • Wessex • Kent • East Anglia

  3. How Did They Live?? • Farmers • Lived in extended family groups • Lived in villages in walled cities • Wood Houses built around a large room called a Hall (a gathering place)

  4. Clothing • Clothes made from woolen cloth or animal skins • Women – dresses held together by brooches • Men – Tunics with Leggings

  5. Beliefs • Pagans – “Not Christians” • Believed in many Gods • Very Superstitious • Believed in: • Lucky Charms • Magic Potions • Stones • Rhymes • Jewels

  6. War • Built wooden ships with sails and oars • Raided Rome by boat • “Sea Raiders” • Small Armies • Fought on Foot

  7. Fighting the Romans • The Romans had built forts along the coasts to keep out “sea-raiders” • British paid Anglo Saxons to fight for them

  8. Hadrian’s Wall • Part of Britain belonged to Rome • Southern Britain did not accept Rome’s Ways • They build Hadrian’s wall to separate themselves

  9. Burial • Placed in a ship at sea • Ship filled with treasure/armor
