What is Stonehenge? • The earliest remains of English history are evident at Stonehenge. • It is a mysterious ancient monument on Salisbury Plain in England. • It is a group of huge, rough cut stones and no one really knows how they got there – the stones are from Wales and Northern England. • It dates back to 1848 BC! • May have been used as a calendar or an altar

  3. Who are the Celts? The first British settlers (Brythons) were the Celts, tall blonde warriors who practiced animism (from the Latin word spirit). They saw spirits in the rivers, trees, stones, ponds, fire, and thunder.. The legend of the Celt named King Arthur is the source of many stories.

  4. Who are the Romans? • England was invaded by the Romans in 55 BC. They remained in England for 400 years. • The Romans set up monasteries, built roads (still in use today), public baths, and introduced Christianity. If the Romans had stayed – we would all be speaking Italian….

  5. Who are the Anglo-Saxons? • Angles and Saxons from Germany and Jutes from Denmark invaded England. After a fierce fight, the Celts retreated into Wales and Scotland • Kings ruled individual clans. The Anglo-Saxons finally banded together to fight the Vikings from Scandinavia. • The language of the Anglo-Saxons became the dominant language of the land and the land became Angla Land (England).

  6. Many Anglo-Saxon words survive today… Thor – Thor’s Day - God of thunder and lightning = Thursday. His sign was the twisted cross (swastika) Wodin – Wodin’s Day - God of death, poetry, and magic = Wednesday

  8. Sutton Hoo • Historically, the Anglo-Saxons were warriors. But, in 1939, archaeologists discovered Sutton Hoo – it gave another perspective!

Writing and Language • The Anglo-Saxons spoke Old English • The scops (poets) told stories orally to the tune of harps • Eventually, the Roman monks wrote down the stories – not many survive • The Exeter Book – a book of riddles. • The Domesday Book – an 1086 survey of people, land and holdings by William the Conqueror • AND…
