  1. Changes of State Chapter 7 Lesson 3 Mr. Breeden

  2. What Happens When Heat is Added or Removed From a Substance? • If enough heat is added or taken away, a physical change can occur • A change of state doesn’t change the substance itself, only changes its physical properties. Chemically, it’s still the same

  3. What Happens When Heat is Added or Removed From a Substance? • Add Heat = Solid  Liquid  Gas • Remove Heat = Gas  Liquid  Solid

  4. Thermal Energy • Thermal Energy- is the TOTAL amount of Kinetic & Potential Energy of the particles in an object

  5. Heat • Heat- is the transfer of thermal energy • Heat travels one direction, from warm objects to cooler objects

  6. Changes of State…Melting • Melting is when a Solid changes to a Liquid • The solid absorbs enough energy to make the particles loosen their bonds with each other • The particles are vibrate faster and faster as more energy is absorbed • The melting point of pure H2O is what?

  7. Changes of State Freezing • Freezing is the opposite of melting • Freezing is when a Liquid loses enough energy to become a solid • Energy is removed, the particles vibrate slower until they eventually vibrate in place • What’s the Freezing point of pure H2O? • What unique about H2O when it freezes?
