Background Information • Isadora Duncan was born on May 26, 1877 in San Francisco, California . • Her parents divorced when she was an infant, and she was raised by her mother, Mary. • Her family was very poor • At the age of five Duncan began to teach movement to the little children in her neighborhood to earn extra money • She was called the “Mother Of Dance”. • Mary Duncan taught her children about music, dance, theater, and literature and Isadora believed that that’s all the education she needed.
Background Information • She thought dancing should be an art, not just entertainment • Isadora did not like ballet because she thought ballet dancers had to follow to many rules on how to bend, stand and move. • -She referred to ballet as “ugly and against nature.” • She liked to move her legs and arms in a very smooth wave like ocean waves or trees swaying in the wind. • At the age of eighteen she urged her mother to move to Chicago and then to New York. • She did get jobs in companies and also got hired to dance at wealthy homes for parties • But after some time she was only getting enough money to survive and she soon had to move to Europe in 1891
Background Information • She had two children, Deirdre and Patrick by two different men. • In 1922 she married a Russian poet named Sergei Yesenin • He was almost twenty years younger than her and he became a violent alcoholic, had a mental breakdown and three years later he killed himself • In the late 1920`s Isadora Duncan’s dancing career was over. • She became the most famous dancer in the world. • She was riding a car that had the roof down, she wore long scarfs around her neck and one end of the scarf got caught in the rear wheel of the car • She died on September 14, 1927
Major Contributions • She was the first American dancer to: • develop a concept of natural breathing. • define movement based on natural and spiritual laws rather than on formed considerations of geometric space. • rigorously compare dance to the other arts, defending it as a primary art form worthy of “high art status”. • deemphasize scenery and costumes in favor of a simple stage setting and simple costumes. • develop a philosophy of dance. • She created a free and natural style for modern.
What was happening in the world? • she lived in Western Europe and the Soviet Union. She was bisexual and alluded to her Communism during her last US tour in 1922-1923. She waved a red scarf and bared her breast on stage in Boston proclaiming, “This is red! So am I!”
