  1. Agriculture and Nature PanelStockholm 2011 Nick Hutchings, Barbara Amon and Rainer Steinbrecher

  2. Agriculture and Nature Panel agenda • Workplan 2010-2011 • Revisit NH3 emissions from crops • Information on other relevant activities • Workplan 2011-2012 2

  3. Workplan 2010-2011 • Review of non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC) emissions from manure management systems (4B). • Review of ammonia emissions from fertilisers (4D). • Update information on NMVOC emissions from natural vegetation – No progress • Develop methodology for ammonia emissions from biogas production (4B)

  4. NMVOC emissions from manure management – last year • Guidebook recognizes existence of emissions but provides no methodology • Previous attempt – unrealistically high emission factors • Were aware of ongoing measurement program in the USA • Postponed decision until this year

  5. NMVOC emissions from manure management – current status • Measurements in US are completed but not available • Options: • Use the US approach • Use modified US approach • Wait until next year to decide

  6. NMVOC emissions from manure management – conclusion • Wait until next year • US results available • Establish a methodology and default emission factors (no more excuses!) • New source? • NMVOC emissions from silage • 10 times greater than from manure management • One study

  7. Ammonia emission from fertilisers • Current section is out of date • No progress to report • Insufficient resources • Suggest carrying item over to Work Plan 2011-2012

  8. Emissions from biogas production • Increasing biogas production • Originally a means to manage animal manure • Increasingly used to generate biogas from energy crops

  9. Emissions from biogas production • Nitrous oxide, NMVOC, ammonia, nitric oxide • Include nitrous oxide in Guidebook method – maintain nitrogen budget • Agreed: • Structure of adapted Tier 2 4B methodology • Partition emissions between NFR codes 4B, 1A1 and 6C • Circulate revised text prior to TFEIP 2012

  10. Ammonia emission from crops • Guidebook recognized existence of emissions but provides no methodology • Agreed last year to a default Tier 1 emission factor • Temporary value until better data becomes available • Suggest no change • Continue to monitor the literature • Denmark to provide documentation of default emission factor

  11. Information on related activities • Diredate project • Data collection to support agri-environmental indicators (incl. NH3) • New Swiss NH3 inventory model • Comparison of national NH3 emission factors • Activities of Task Force on Reactive Nitrogen (TFRN) • European Nitrogen Assessment

  12. Working practices in Panel • Mainly inventory compilers • Research scientists go to TFRN meetings • Better communication with scientific community • Closer co-operation with TFRN Expert Panel on Mitigation of Agricultural Nitrogen

  13. Workplan 2011-2012 • Review of non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC) emissions from manure management systems (4B). Integrate US results when available. • Review of ammonia emissions from fertilisers (4D). • Update information on NMVOC emissions from natural vegetation • Finalise methodology for emissions from biogas production (4B)
