Introductionto DVB-GBS 0005r15 • By definition, TV-Anytime is independent from • The transport layer • broadcast networks, broadband, mobile networks, … • The type of terminals • PVR, PC, PDA, Mobile phones • The group DVB-GBS • has specified how • TV-Anytime data must be signaled and carried in DVB transport streams • has extended and adapted TV-Anytime • to fit the unidirectional environment requirements • to better target low-cost receivers

Demonstration Synopsis • End-to-end TV-Anytime System • Based on DVB-GBS 0005r15 specification for unidirectional delivery of TV-Anytime metadata • BBC server equipement (Linux server and DVB-T modulator) • Pioneer DVB-T terminal (24MB de SDRAM, 4MB Flash, STM 166 Mhz processor ) • EXPWAY BiM software (Encoder & Decoder) • Delivery of TV-Anytime EPG via DVB • Metadata service (19 TV & radio channels for 7 days) delivered using the DVB Object Carousel • Location resolution supported by a separate Content Referencing Information (CRI) service carried in MPEG private sections

TVA Database CRI Service Compiler Stream Player Modulator Pioneer STB Metadata Service Compiler Object Carousel Compiler DVB multiplex System Architecture • TV-Anytime metadata files are imported and encoded in order to generate 2 data streams (metadata and CRI) • A DVB multiplex is assembled by combining the 2 data streams together with video streams • The complete multiplex is then presented to the modulator through a DVB ASI interface

TV-Anytime metadata utilized • Program Information Table • CRID • Title (average size: 15 characters) • Synopsis (average size: 112 characters) • Genre, Keywords, Related Materials (web-site URL), content formats (16/9, stereo,…) • Program Location Table • CRID • Program Location • Date/start time • Duration Demonstration

TV-Anytime vs EIT: a bandwidth advantage… • Metadata are 4 times smaller to carry than their EIT equivalent • Statistics on the EPG service presented (equivalent to EIT) • Object Carousel Sections - TV-Anytime metadata : 61,2Ko • DVB EIT Schedule Sections : 250,7Ko • A format that is therefore suitable from low-end receivers to high-end PVRs

  8. TVA vs EIT: a Convergence enabler • A format that allows the Convergence with mobile terminals • Author data once only and enlarge your audience by distributing to many devices Ex. of TVA EPG based on BBC TVA MD Symbian 6.0, Nokia 3650 platform

  9. Conclusion • A standard suitable to low-end receivers as well as high-end PVRs • A format reducing bandwidth costs for metadata carriage • A format that allows convergence with mobile terminals & services • A concrete testing framework in Europe with the UK DTG TV-Anytime Testbed Project
