Background • We have been examine political cartoons since the beginning of the year. • They are considered an important form of expression in the Western world; political cartoonists understand this and use it to their advantage by exaggerating the points they wish to express. • A political cartoon is intended to send a clear message, with clear symbolism, that everyone can understand. • In a time before literacy was common, political cartoons could be used to make a point with very few words • It was a way to share a message with an entire population. • You will now be a political cartoonist to share a point about the beginnings of the Cold War with the population of our class.

Directions • You will be given 1 of 18 topics in the beginnings of the Cold War • On paper provided, you make a political cartoon making a commentary on your subject • You must display an image, or images that illustrate the main point(s) of your topic • Use people (caricatures or otherwise), shapes of nations, animals that represent the nations, landmarks, everyday items, etc. • You may use words, phrases to emphasis a point, or to make clear particular elements of the cartoon, but try to keep them to a minimum • You may have a particular bias to your cartoon to show your attitude regarding the subject matter
