Indices. An Index is an arbitrarily defined number that provides a measure of scale. e.g. Level of achievement: 4 Above standard 3 At Standard 2 More than passable but below standard 1 Passable R Below a pass. BMI. e.g. 3 BMI (Body Mass Index) BMI = mass/height 2

  1. Indices • An Index is an arbitrarily defined number that provides a measure of scale. • e.g. Level of achievement: • 4 Above standard • 3 At Standard • 2 More than passable but below standard • 1 Passable • R Below a pass

  2. BMI • e.g. 3 BMI (Body Mass Index) • BMI = mass/height2 • (where mass is in Kilograms and height is in meters) • For a 79 Kg person 1.72 meters tall • BMI = 79/1.722 = 23.67

  3. Slugging Percentage • SP=total Bases/total at bats • = (# home runs*4+ # Triples*3 + # doubles*2+#base hits)/total at bat • The above index is an alternative to using batting average to account that the contribution of each hit could be different.
