  2. 1. Main Idea Question The readers wil be asked what the topic of the passage is about

  3. 2. Detail Question The readers are asked to identify factual information that is stated directly in the passage. Usually the information is only given once in the passage. The question will not ask about a general theme or idea.

  4. 3. Pronoun Refers Question The readers are asked what the highlighted word refers to. If it is a pronoun, then the reader needs to identify what word the pronoun is replacing.

  5. 4. Vocabulary Question The readers are asked what a word or phrase is closest in meaning to and are given 4 answer options. They need to be able to understand the meaning of the word as it is used in the passage.

  8. First: Identify a Question There are 6 types of question: What is the topic of the passage? What is the subject of the passage? What is the main idea of the passage? What is the author main point of the passage? What is the author primally concerned? Which of the following sentences would be the best title?

  9. Second: Find the Answer Where we can find the answer? The anwer to this type of question can generally be determined by looking at the first sentence of each paragraph.

Third: How to Answer Read the first line of each paragraph Look for a common theme or idea in the first line Pass your eyes quickly (skimming) over the test of the passage to check that you have really found the topic sentence. Eliminate any definitely wrong answer and choose the best answer from the remaining choices.

  11. Example from the Paper TOEFL test The passage: In the philosophy of John Dewey, a sharp distinction is made between intelligence and reasoning. According to Dewey, intelligence is the only absolute way to achieve a balance between realism and idealism, between practicality and wisdom life. Intelligence involves “interacting with other things and knowing them,” while reasoning is merely the act of an observer,”...a mind that beholds or grasps objects outside the world of things....” With reasoning, a level of mental certainty can be achieved, but it is through intelligence that control is taken of events that shape one’s life.
