  2. Electrical Circuits • Current Electricity: The flow of electric charges. • Defined as the flow of positive charges • Physically incorrectbased on what we know about the atom

The Atom • Contains three sub-atomic particles • Protons (p+): Positively charged, inside the nucleus. • Neutrons (n0): No charge, inside the nucleus • Electrons (e-): Negatively charged, in shells outside the nucleus. • Since it requires a lot of energy to break a nucleus, protons cannot flow. • Electrons, in shells, can be removed easily. • Current electricity is physically the flow of electrons. Components of a Circuit • Every circuit is made up of four essential components: • Source: The source of electrical energy (electrons) • i.e: Battery, wall outlet • Load: Device which transforms electrical energy into something else. • i.e: Lightbulb, iPod, etc. • Switch: Device which controls electron flow • Conductor: Substance in which electrons can easily move. • i.e: Electrical wires

  5. Types of Circuits Series Parallel • One path for electrons to flow. • Multiple paths for electrons to flow. Lamp (bulb) Wire Cell (battery) Switch (open)
