  2. Walk With a Scholar (WWS) scheme proposes to arrange specialized mentoring programs for students in Under Graduate Programs in Arts, Science and Commerce and to provide guidance for their future.

  3. The Scheme aims at giving necessary orientation to needy students, to prepare them for employment and give them necessary guidance, motivation and necessary mental support to identify appropriate areas for higher study as well as employment.

  4. Mentoring • “A mentor is a trusted counselor and guide” • 4

  5. Mentee • “ a Mentee is one who seeks to learn and grow with the guidance of a more experienced or knowledgeable person” • 5

  6. Mentor will use listening, counseling, coaching, career advising, and goals setting to help mentee make progress on their Career Development Plan Goals • Expand available options • Explore referral resources • Build self-esteem • Evaluate each meeting

  7. The role of mentors is to:

  8. A mentor is a mix of four skills: • Coach – helping the mentee achieve specific targets. May challenge assumptions and stretch the mentee. The coach is leading the process. • Counsellor – the most important skill here is listening. A supportive person for the mentee to talk to in confidence. • Networking – everyone needs to be part of networks to function well. The mentor introduces the mentee to university networks – formal and informal. • Guide – sometimes the mentor ‘gives the answer’ from their own experience. However always giving the answer does not allow the mentee to grow in themselves. • What is the best mix of these attributes? • Are there others we should include? • The mentoring mix: • Coaching • Guiding • Counselling • Networking • Friend, adviser, supporter, encourager
