  1. Satire Reading*Gulliver’s Travels II * By: Katelyn and Hollie

  2. Summarize the criticism • Swift is criticizing war, and the way England and France go to war for stupid reasons. The king of Bribdingnagare clearly stated, “Grildrig, I cannot but conclude the bulk of your natives to be the most pernicious race of little odious ( hateful, disgusting) vermin that nature ever suffered to crawl upon the surface of the earth.” • Grildrig stated, “ I told him of an invention discovered between 3 and 4 hundred years ago, to make a certain powder, into an heap of which the smallest spark of fire falling, would kindle the whole in a moment, although it was were as big as a mountain, make it all fly up in the air together…” • The King was struck with horror, “ He was amazed how so impotent and groveling an insect as I could entertain such inhuman ideas, and in so familiar a manner as to appear wholly unmoved at all the sense of blood and desolation which I had painted as the common effects of those destructive machines; whereof he said some evil genius, enemy to mankind, must have been the first contriver.”

  3. Identify In Gulliver’s Travels part 2 : • He was targeting England and France societies • Swift expresses his dislikes of politicians leading England and France with the phrase, “ You have clearly proved that ignorance, idleness, and viceare the proper ingredients for qualifying a legislator.” • By this we mean he is saying that the people leading England are guilty of ignorance, idleness, andvice.

  4. Compare/ Contrast :) • Gulliver vs. Chaucer Society • Compare: • In both stories the societies wanted power and were criticized by others. • Contrast: • Gulliver: • People have their jobs and they do them • People are un-judgmental Chaucer: • People are judgmental • The church is hypocritical • People are flawed • People don’t know what they want • People are lazy; they don’t do their jobs Gulliver & Chaucer vs. American Society • Gulliver & Chaucer’s societieswanted power and there was a lot of criticism this in our opinion still applies in today society.

  5. Evaluate • British Society better or worse ( Chaucer’s time) ?? • In our reading of Chaucer’s society, these are some of the criticism’s we found about that society: • People are judgmental • People are lazy; they don’t do their jobs • People are worldly, not spiritual • People don’t live right • People don’t take marriage vows seriously enough This can be proved through with for example : characters in the church such as The Monk was suppose to pray and worship all day but instead he would prefer to hunt.

  6. Evaluate part 2 • In our reading of Swift’s society, people criticized war and power over England and France. • They thought that England and France societies were ignorant Gulliver said, “ I dare engage, those creatures have their titles, and distinction of honor, they contrive little nest and burrows, that they call houses and cities; they make a figure in dress and horses and carriages; they love, they fight, they dispute, they cheat, they betray.” Who’s society has gotten better or worse?? In our opinion we say that nether society is better then the other. We say this because they are equality negative … In Chaucer society all citizens were negative impacts to each other, in the church, and in the society. Then In Swift’s society they wanted war against England and France each and every day. So we feel neither society is better through our opinions :)

  7. Personalize Three Prime examples: • The US is fighting in Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan • Russia is terrorizing Mongolia • China is at war with its people trying to enforce a one child policy.--It officially restricts married, urban couples to having only one child, while allowing exemptions for several cases, including rural couples, ethnic minorities, and parents without any siblings themselves.[2] A spokesperson of the Committee on the One-Child Policy has said that approximately 35.9% of China's population is currently subject to the one-child restriction.
