  1. Beginning (5 minutes) Pick up Atomic Theory/Atomic Mass and Number Worksheet I would like you like to start reviewing the atomic theory quietly

  2. Test Return (15 minutes) Put your phone away Come and get your test QUIETLY when you heard your name You are allowed to discuss your test with your neighbors QUIETLY

  3. CHEM 11 Atomic Theory and Atomic mass mass and number February 28th 2014

  4. Announcement • Office Hour: Day 2 Lunch A204 • Course Schedule: • Feb 28th Atomic Theory, Atomic number, Atomic Mass • March 4th: Isotopes- What about the pennies? • March 6th: Electronic Structure and Electronic Configuration

  5. My expectation on work habit in this classroom • Beginning of the class • Check the board for the task to do for the first five minute of the class and do it • Hand in or open your homework depending on previous class so that Mr. Liang can check it without asking you • End of the class • Quietly sit back to your seat and wait for Mr. Liang’s wrap-up announcement. This might include the reminder for homework • Before you leave the room, check the board for the assignment

  6. Ancient Greek Periodic Table • Aristolte’s theory of matter Air Water Moist Hot Cold Fire Earth Dry

  7. Dalton Atomic Theory • 1. each element is made of tiny particles called atoms • 2. The atoms of a given element are identical. The atoms of different element are different. • 3. Chemical compound are formed when atoms are combined with each other • 4. Chemical reaction involve reorganization of the atoms

  8. Implication of Dalton Atomic Theory • Law of definite proportions: every pure sample of particular compound always contains the same proportion by mass of the element in the compound. (i.e. H2O) • Law of conservation of mass: the mass of reactants equal to the mass of products.

  9. Thompson Model (Plum Pudding) - - + + - + + - - +

  10. Rutherford Gold Experiment • Rutherford discovered alpha (α), beta (β), and gamma (Υ) particles • Alpha particle is He2+ • Rutherford discovered densely packed centre of positive charge which he called nucleus • Predicted the existence of neutron +

  11. Niels Bohr- Bohr-Rutherford Model • Developed an explanation of atomic structure that underlines regularities of periodic table of element. His atomic model had atom built up of successive orbital shells of electrons - +
