  3. A typical Indian is not desperate for higher speeds or higher axle loads He/She wants only assured transportation service

Representations from MLA/MP/Any Public Therefore, Our thinking process and also the brain storming should focus on how to meet the public expectations rather than trying for too high Normally for more trains or more coaches or increase in frequency of trains But not for “Reducing travel time say from 20 hrs to 18 hrs or so”

  8. If maxm speeds increase from 100 to 150, can average speeds increase by 50%? No Apart from MPS, factors like signaling, LCs, junction/terminal constrains etc affect average speed

  10. LCs are not only safety Hazards They are also speed breakers of the system Today effect is not felt much because of short cuts in PN exchange Just implement electronic PN exchanger and ensure PN exchange exactly as laid down! Then see how speeds come down

  11. Don’t man/interlock LCs; Eliminate them • By Diversion of Roads • By RUBs • By ROBs • By under passes Last option is yet to be explored on IR in a big way

  12. Elimination of Unmanned LCs • Once thought unthinkable • Today it is becoming a reality If elimination of LCs is our mission, number of innovative solutions emerge

  13. Control Permanent Speed Restrictions & increase capacity • Permanent : Can not be relaxed • Semi-Permanent : Restriction should not reflect continuously in more than 2 WTTs. • PHOD should only be competent to classify as permanent or semi permanent

  14. Some Simple Strategies 1 • 686m CSR permits 27 coaches + BV + 2 Locos. Make all trains 27 coach • If a section is fit for 150kmph, why only one train? Run all coaching trains at 150 kmph. • Increase goods trains speeds by over powering (even by small extant gives great relief)

  15. Some Simple Strategies 2 • Increase speeds in junction yards to 30 kmph from the present 15 kmph • Redesign all yards for universal R&D facilities even by reducing a line or 2 • Quadraple a few block sections on approaches of all junction yards

  16. Some Simple Strategies 3 • Eliminate engine reversals by making all trains push pull (even for express trains). • Eliminate engine reversals at junction yards by constructing bye-pass lines • Remove bottlenecks at loading and unloading points

  17. Some Simple Strategies 4 • Provide sidings at all stations for track machines • Ban Hand shunting. Shunting only by shunt signals. • Enhance coach maintenance capacities, pit lines etc

  18. Conclusions • High Speeds on exg system is not worth • Existing speeds are good enough. • Simply enhance the capacity with the conventional technology
