  3. structural data of Schleswig-Holstein • number of inhabitants: 2.8 million • area: round about 16.000 square kilometres • number of local communities: 1.125 • 3 largest towns and no. of inhabitants: • Kiel(234.190) • Lübeck (210.930) • Flensburg (86.297) • unemployment rate: • in general: • 9,6 % (2007) • youth unemployment rate (under 25 years): • 9,2 % (2007)

  4. structural data of Schleswig-Holstein • The organizations which work for youth on a regional level: We have about 30 youth organizations in general (Verbände) and 10 youth organizations for cultural youth work on the level of the federal state Schleswig-Holstein. • You will find them under: www.ljrsh.de and www.lkj-sh.de Within smaller communities we have much more youth organizations or initiatives supported by the communities or by the administrative districts. Besides there is done a lot of different youth work by the political parties. Each political party has got its own national and regional youth-network which is organized by the youth on their own but financed by the parties.

  6. legal framework • There is a legal basis for the youth work in our region called “Jugendförderungsgesetz Schleswig-Holstein”. • It determines: • a financial support by the government to • youth organizations (in general) • independent youth initiatives (in general) • the participation of youth • at community level • in Kindergarden • youth and child protection

  7. political and social participation • There are mechanisms for youth participation in political and regional development and decision-making processes on a legal basis in § 47 f. Gemeindeordnung (Communal right). • There are some socio-scientific studies on a regular basis dealing with specific interest of youth work in the evangelical youth and youth-work in the country. • Our regional government has developed a “Children-and-Youth- Action- Plan” to support different themes or topics of help for young people and families to promote youth work.

  8. learning and living democracy • In our region we have got “democratic civic education” for the young people especially in youth work and sometimes at school in case of political education projects. They are support with money, information and projects. • The government has also got initiatives and activities: • relating to promote youth’s activity • relating to an intercultural dialogue learning (but not in a large measure) • relating to global energy and climate change learning (especially done by some youth organizations)
