  1. Simple Solutions to Stop Bullying

  2. If you are the victim… • The bully will continue if they see yougetting upset or angry. Do not retaliate or fight back, that is what the bully wants! Instead… • Make a joke, laugh at yourself, use humor or give them a compliment. • Act confident without being aggressive or violent and tell them to stop. • Try to stay calm and confident. Don’t say a word to the bully and show no emotion. Make eye contact, hold your head up, stand up straight, and walk away confidently. • Avoid unsupervised areas. Always try to have a friend around.

  3. Victim continued… • Make friends with other students. Power in numbers, especially when friends stick up for each other. • If necessary, take steps to rebuild your self-confidence. Make new friends, learn new activities you enjoy, extracurricular activities, sports teams, other groups. • Do not bring expensive items to school. • If you are bullied continuously, tell parents, teacher, counselor, principal, or trusted adult.

  4. Stephen’s Story and Solutions

  5. If you are a bystander… • Never join in bullying behaviors. • Try to diffuse the situation when you see it start. Try to draw attention away from the victim or tell the bully to ‘‘cool it.’’ (Do not place yourself at risk.) • Partner with targeted students. Include them in your group to avoid being singled out. • Stand together against a bully. Let the bully know that their behavior is not acceptable and will not be tolerated. • Try to involve a teacher or another adult as soon as the bullying starts.
