Striking Germany • At the Casablanca Conference (1943), FDR & Churchill agreed to step up the bombing of Germany & to fight for an unconditional surrender • The Allied bombing campaign on Germany caused an oil shortage, wrecked the railroad system, & destroyed aircraft factories, leaving the Allies in control of the air

  3. II. Landing in France A. In order to liberate France, Allies planned Operation Overlord (D-Day), led by General Eisenhower (June 6, 1944) 1. Allied troops landed on the 5 beaches of Normandy in the largest land-sea-air invasion in U.S. history SUPREME ALLIED COMMANDER GENERAL EISENHOWER SPEAKS WITH PARATROOPERS JUST BEFORE THEY EMBARK TO JUMP INTO NAZI OCCUPIED FRANCE

  4. BUILDUP FOR D-DAY IN ENGLAND: •Led by Allied Supreme Commander General Dwight D. Eisenhower •3,000,000 men in 52 divisions •80,000 trucks; 10,000 tanks; •5200 bombers; 5500 fighters; 2400 transport planes from 163 airfields; •1200 naval ships: 2 battleships, 23 cruisers, 105 destroyers, 2500 landing craft

  5. THOUSANDS OF TROOPS ARRIVED IN FRANCE ON TOWED GLIDERS. MANY CRASHED, KILLING THEIR PILOTS AND PASSENGERS.

  7. A HEAVY PRICE WAS PAID FOR THE SUCCESSFUL INVASION OF FRANCE. THERE IS NO “OFFICIAL” CASUALTY FIGURE FOR D-DAY. ESTIMATES ARE 10,000 ALLIED CASUALTIES.

  11. GERMANSLAUNCHED A SURPRISE ATTACK THROUGH THE ARDENNES FOREST THAT CAUGHT THE US ARMY UNPREPARED. THEFIGHTING LASTED FROM DECEMBER 16TH TO FEBRUARY 9TH 1945

The Third Reich Collapses A.Battle of the Bulgein Belgium, Hitler’s last offensive, resulted in Allied victory (Feb. 1945) BOTH SIDES LOST MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF MEN AND EQUIPMENT BUT WHILE THE AMERICANS COULD EASILY MAKE UP THE LOSSES THE GERMANS COULD NOT AND THE WAR WOULD BE OVER WITHIN MONTHS KILLED, WOUNDED, CAPTURED, MISSING AT THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE

  13. THE END APPROACHES FOR NAZI GERMANY AND HITLER AS THE US, BRITAIN AND CANADA ATTACK FROM THE WEST WHILE THE RUSSIANS MASSIVELY ATTACK FROM THE EAST

  14. US AND SOVIET SOLDIERS GREET EACH OTHER AT TORGAU, GERMANY IN APRIL OF 1945. US TROOPS MOVE THOUGH A GERMAN VILLAGE WHERE EVERY HOUSE IS FLYING A WHITE FLAG OF SURRENDER

  15. III. The Third Reich Collapses… B. FDR died April 12, 1945 & was replaced by Harry Truman HARRY TRUMAN IS SWORN IN AS PRESIDENT

  16. III. The Third Reich Collapses… C. Germany surrendered unconditionally on May 7, 1945 and the next day was proclaimed V-E Day GERMAN FIELD MARSHALL WILHELM KEITEL SURRENDERS AT SOVIET HEADQUARTERS IN BERLIN, MAY 9, 1945.THE WAR IN EUROPE IS OVER!
