  3. Pre-class assignments • 1. Ask your grandparents and you parents what kind of music they like and what their pastimes are. • 2. Ask them what the four luxuries of a family in 1970s, 1980s and the late 1990s were. • 3. Take a look at the pictures of their youth. • 4. Compare yours with theirs in the above two items.

  4. Leading-in • Listen to the music. Which one is familiar to you? Which do you like most?

  5. Look at these pictures. What feelings do you have about their hair styles?

  6. Reference words • It looks funny/traditional. • It’s out of date. • It’s in fashion. • The girl looks elegant. • She’s modern/fashionable/stylish.

Useful expressions: • make life different from time to time • helps people make choices while shopping • promote business and the economy • waste money • takes up too much of people’s attention and time • make everyone look the same or do the same thing

Reading through • Background information Except those covered in the Leading-in section, things like exercise, language, names are also greatly influenced of fashion. • Name: Someone called Jianguo, Geming, Hongwei and Guoqing were highly marked by the time of their birth. • Language: People in 1950s ~1980s liked to address another person, esp. a sales person, comrade. Some elderly people like to do so nowadays. However, we like to address another person Miss, Mr., Mrs., Ms, etc.

Other examples: waiter, prince, host waitress, princess, hostess • enjoy enjoy doing • hero (pl.) heroes, tomatoes, potatoes pianos, phonos, photos (these words are short forms for pianoforte, phonograph and photograph, so the plural forms are plus “s”.)

  27. Writing Suggestions • Mention your name if necessary. • State you’re please to accept the invitation or decline it politely. • State the reason if you decline it. • Repeat the time and date and place. • Repeat the occasion to which the invitation mentions.
