PI Project Management Advantages Control over all aspects of the project Money kept in the school Disadvantages Additional administration, but minimise by budgeting for admin support Additional Project Management work – beyond the technical management of the research Risk of under-resourcing due to PI’s other commitments

Appoint a Project Manager Advantages Leaves PI more time for research Money kept in the school Cost relatively low Good liaison between project manager and PI Very efficient if experienced project manager used Disadvantages Additional cost compared with PI project management PM may be learning if an RA (- but can build expertise) Possible loss of PM 6 months before project end

External Project Manager / Consultancy Advantages Leaves PI more time to do research Brings in EU project management expertise to school Can use for both proposal writing and PM Disadvantages Higher cost – eg 2.9% to 5.5% of total budget Increased effort required for communication PI to PM Expertise may be in a limited area (eg Health) Smaller consultancies may be resource limited

  6. Project Management Support Available University’s Project Management Framework Courses on project management and leadership run by Human Resources Project Management Software – Cost relatively low, but adds up with training costs
