UNITS OF INQUIRY: SECRETS REVEALED • Six units at each year level (except K1 and K2) • Six Transdisciplinary Themes • Variety of lengths, usually 6 weeks • Single subject & homeroom teachers contribute • Specific structure following the inquiry cycle • Specific components that repeat each unit

  2. INQUIRY UNIT STAGES STAGE ONE Immersion • Begins with engaging and exciting activities • Classroom is set up in new or interesting ways • Lots of hands on items / books / objects in the room • Often begins with an Excursion / Incursion • Generally lasts for the first week or two

  3. INQUIRY UNIT STAGES STAGE TWOFormative Assessment • Used to clarify student understandings • Seek out specific student interests • Can be used to compare and contrast • The are usually simple, clear and broad • This is used in an ongoing manner through the unit

  4. INQUIRY UNIT STAGES STAGE THREEEssential Elements Two or three key concepts are linked to each unit Targeted Transdisciplinary skills Attitudes and Learner Profile These are sometimes explored in a stand alone manner, but then further connections are made Formally assessed as part of the unit

  5. INQUIRY UNIT STAGES STAGE FOURTeacher led activities • Many learning experiences • Language and Maths are frequently embedded • Subject Discipline outcomes are taught • Help to explore the central idea • Caters to a variety of different learning styles

  6. INQUIRY UNIT STAGES STAGE FIVEStudent Questions • Generally guided and structured • Frequently based on key concepts • Important they are Answerable • Broad and deep, unable to be answered quickly • Looks different at each year level

  7. INQUIRY UNIT STAGES STAGE SIXPersonal Inquiry • Can be guided or open • Finding answers from a variety of sources • Students plan and set inquiry goals • Unique and personal to student • Builds on understandings

  8. INQUIRY UNIT STAGES STAGE SEVENSummative Assessment • Assesses central idea understanding • Often negotiated with student in upper years • Students receive a variety of feedback • Take place in the final weeks of unit • Can be a major unit event or quite quick to complete

INQUIRY UNIT STAGES STAGE EIGHT Reflection and Action • Very important part of the Inquiry • Everyone goes back to the start • Student andteacher need to reflect in detail • Reflections need to be useful and practical • Documented and detailed in portfolios and planners • Student Action takes place towards the end
