  1. Highlights from the UK Dr Robin Clegg Science in Society Programme Robin.Clegg@stfc.ac.uk www.stfc.ac.uk/PandS/Contents.aspx EPPOG Meeting Lisbon May 2007

  2. UK – around 20 PP research groups Funding agency – PPARC and CCLRC merged to form STFC – includes Rutherford & Daresbury Labs Big emphasis on LHC outreach (€1M UK programme) ‘Ask the Public’, Website, exhibition, first publications, Parliamentary event, large coverage in mass media, documentary films, animations commissioned – much done (credit Ray Mathias, UK LHC Comms Manager) Other outreach continues:- EPPOG Meeting Lisbon May 2007

  3. www.particlephysics.ac.ukhas sections on Explore > Find out what particle physics is all about Study > The best web links for students at school or university Technology > Discover how particle physics technology benefits industry Teach > Links and resources for teachers in schools and colleges Research > Information for particle physics researchers News > The latest news, 'picture of the month' and archive. EPPOG Meeting Lisbon May 2007

  4. UK MASTERCLASSES • 17 groups, 13 March to 24 April • 24 Classes (16-18s plus teachers) • Many are large, eg Manchester- 180 students; RAL – 500 students from 36 schools over 3 days • some using BaBar data not OPAL/DELPHI • EuroClass? - seek inspiring addition eg Nobel Laureate at CERN; quiz good; technical problems • Dates, time difference issues EPPOG Meeting Lisbon May 2007

  5. COSMIC RAY DETECTORS FOR SCHOOLS • Different UK groups using different apparatus • Consortium led by Lee Thompson (Sheffield) looking into kit, linked to Eur/US/Can networks • ‘Eurocosmics’ umbrella, meeting autumn 2007 • UK open workshop, summer 2007, for interested physicists and teacher • For a network, issue of cost per school (aiming for 3k€ per experiment?) EPPOG Meeting Lisbon May 2007

  6. EPPOG Meeting Lisbon May 2007

  7. Masterclass 2007 – 120 18year olds from 12 schools • ‘CASCADE’ competition: 17-18yr olds prepare and give interactive presentations on particle physics to younger students (27 schools; some prize-winners visited CERN) OTHER HIGHLIGHTS – BIRMINGHAM UNIV EPPOG Meeting Lisbon May 2007

  8. HIGHLIGHT – EDINBURGH UNIV • 18-year old students get bursaries to work with particle physics (Alan Walker) • Measures angular distribution of cosmic rays, and rate at the top of a mountain • Wins prizes at national & international science fairs, and has asteriod named after her! • Part of ‘Particle Physics for Scottish Schools’ framework EPPOG Meeting Lisbon May 2007

  9. EPPOG Meeting Lisbon May 2007

  10. EPPOG Meeting Lisbon May 2007

  11. OTHER HIGHLIGHTS STFC Small Awards – up to 20k € (40/year) STFC Large Awards – up to 100k € (3/year) Examples – PP for Scottish Schools; PP and music (strings/violin) Science Centre Awards – must include 11-16s STFC Science & Society Fellowships (2/year) Example Dr Maggie Aderin works with African-Caribbean ethnic minority groups around London and is making a film EPPOG Meeting Lisbon May 2007

  12. EXAMPLES OF ‘SMALL AWARDS’ PROJECTS LHC Monthly Podcasts, with personal blog and ‘particle of the month’ – Brian Cox. 14k€ Lancaster Particle Physics Package- add LHC module 12k€ Travelling Spark Chamber for Schools – Birmingham, 10k€ Particle Physics at the Welsh Eisteddfod (national cultural event) 14k€ See www.stfc.ac.uk/PandS/Contents.aspx for details EPPOG Meeting Lisbon May 2007

  13. ‘PLUG-IN’ APROACH Want (particle physics) to be featured in the content and programming of science centres and museums (13M visitors to UK sites per year) Hold seminar in partnership with ecsite-uk, the national sector organisation Show them what is on offer, including links to CERN Also plug PP in to teacher training & professional development programmes that others run EPPOG Meeting Lisbon May 2007
