  1. Imagine the scene... You own your own travel business. You love to travel. You are currently on holiday and so are travelling. It is what you do. You have flown out to the middle of the Pacific Ocean to explore an area that you have not been to before. So you hire a sailing boat from the main island. And there it is... An island paradise, with no-one around. Wait a minute...there is smoke from over there. You sail around the coast in the direction of the smoke. What a place. And there are the locals... They seem interested and rather friendly. But at the same time some of them are wearing a frown. Their village is rather basic, with wooden huts and open fires where they cook. The children are running around chasing the hens in the space between the huts. Adults are returning from gathering fresh fruit and vegetables from the trees and fields nearby.

  2. You can see it now... People would flock to this place. But there is nothing here...except the locals. What would they think... Would the plans that you have be welcomed by the locals or not? No matter this is too good an opportunity to miss. If you don’t, someone else will. Better get going on that boat back to the main island to speak to the relevant people. What do you think... How would the island change? Would the locals be FOR or AGAINST the changes? Would the island be IMPROVED?

  3. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: To DESCRIBE how a RESORT might DEVELOP (CHANGE) with the introduction and growth of TOURISM. To DEFINE the term MULTIPLIER EFFECT.

  4. TASKS: On a copy of the image of the island (on the next slide) draw a MULTIPLIER TREE which shows how the island will develop with the introduction of any tourist industry. Write 50 words which describes what has happened overall.

  5. PROVIDING FOR TOURISTS A MULTIPLIER EFFECT N Waipur Island
