  2. Kings Canyon • Located in the southern Sierra Nevada • The Kings Canyon is 461,901 acres • About 570,000 visitors a year • Is home to the deepest canyon in the United States at over a mile and a half deep

History • In 1940, Kings Canyon National Park was created, encompassing the original General Grant Park and a great deal of additional land north of Sequoia National Park • In 1943, as a wartime economy measure, the park began to be administered by the same superintendent as Sequoia, an arrangement which persists to this day

  4. Sequoia National Park • Sequoia National Park is south of and contiguous with Kings Canyon National Park • The park is famous for its giant sequoia trees, including the General Sherman tree, one of the largest trees on Earth • The second oldest national park in the U.S. behind Yellowstone

Geology • Kings Canyon is a wide glacial valley featuring tall cliffs, a meandering river, green vibrant meadows and waterfalls • Most of the mountains and canyons in the Sierra Nevada are formed in granitic rocks • it is clear that the Sierra Nevada is a young mountain range, probably not more than 10 million years old, during that time at least four periods of glacial advance have coated the mountains in a thick mantle of ice • The Kings Canyon is home to over 1530 plants, 204 birds, 83 mammalian, 24 reptile, 12 amphibian, and 8 fish species
