What is Service Learning? • Service-Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. Past Bay Area Projects… • Puppet show that addressed issues around illegal immigrants • Play about what to do if you find a gun (produced after a schoolmate shot himself) • Video interviewing ex-gang members  • Book of poems A through Z to help teach  younger kids how to read • Interviewed Oakland Mayoral Candidate and researched Oakland History • “Five alive song" about the poor quality of fruits and vegetables found in the Bayview(performed live at City Hall)

  6. Service Learning is more than just… • The Park or School Clean Up • The Nursing Home Visit • The Red Cross Disaster Relief Donation • The Canned Food Drive

Program Requirements • All teams must meet for at least 2 hours each week. • All classes must take place at a regularly scheduled time and classroom. • Prepare for class! • Incorporate journaling and poetry • All students participate in community service for at least 2 hours (not including prep and reflection)

  8. Class structure • Literary Moment • Journaling / Discussion • Lesson • Model, Brainstorm, Individual and/or group work • Share / Wrap-up

Demonstration and Display: Due May 5th • Creative title and school/student names • Mission Statement • Project summary/overview • What actions did you take and how did it go? • Original Student Writing: poem, articles, letters, etc • Sample Literary Moment: News article, poem, art, etc. • Photos • Results: Testimony, feedback and evaluation information • Glue thoroughly and cover with contact paper!
