    5. Sea ice is shrinking . . . . A quick look at the satellite photos presented in this slide shows that is 1979 (upper half of photo), ice cover extended over the Arctic Ocean from edge to edge. As temperature rose in these areas. The ice cover receded by 9% per decade, so that in 2003 (lower half of photo), large areas of open ocean had appeared near Russia, Alaska and Canada.
