  1. Role of Non Profit Organisations In Rural Development In India

  2. A majority of the Indian population depends on agriculture for its livelihood. India stands second in terms of horticultural produce. • It also produces cereals and has a considerable section of its population dependent on allied agricultural industries such as fisheries, dairy and poultry. However, for farmers the problems never seem to end. • Poor rainfall, lack of resources for seeds, fertilisers etc are common problems that most farmers face.

  3. Rural development is essential for the welfare of the country. • The Government of India has launched various schemes and policies for rural development. • These schemes aim at providing ample opportunities to the rural section of the population and bringing them at par with the mainstream population living in the cities.

  4. Lack of opportunities in the rural areas of India has led to migration in large number to the bigger cities of the country. • This has caused problems such as shortage of accommodation facilities, employment opportunities, development of slums, shortage of public utilities, increase in crime among several other infrastructural shortcomings.

  5. To curb all these problems, rural development is an absolute must. Although the government is working through its agencies and departments to reach out to most rural areas in the country, it is logistically quite difficult for them.

  6. This is where non profit organisations come in as the most effective agencies. Non profit organisations have the benefit of being integrally associated with the local communities. • Another major advantage they enjoy is being location specific in nature and hence aware of the problems that could arise. Besides, they are also well enabled and equipped to make use of the advantages that are available. • Non profit organisations have been given much importance in the rural development scheme even by the government. It is for this reason that there are around 25,000 to 30,000 active NGOs in India.
